BBC website process
Until December 1997 the BBC didn't even have an official website. Their first one was very basic with just two simple sections. The current BBC site gets around 22 million visitors a week and is huge.
This post on the BBC blog from Bronwyn van der Merwe, Head of Design and User Experience shows the process they went through to create a new design for the site.
This really shows how to do a proper job of designing a website. One wonders what the budget was.

As designers, we’re all trying to get better at what we do. I surf the Web daily trying to find useful tips and tricks to enhance my design skills.
But what if I spent less time looking for inspiration and more time designing things...?
The reason I say this is due to a chance visit to the Flying Mouse 365 website.
The site is based on the concept of doing one design per day for a whole year! Every week there are 7 new designs available to purchase.

17 December 2009 by Adi GoaterInvisible man?
In a world of Photoshop and special effects it could be argued that artistic craft is getting harder to come by.
Liu Bolin doesn’t use any fancy technology to produce these jaw-dropping illusion of invisibility – his urban camouflage photography is a combination of paint and pure talent.
The Beijing-based artist spends hours studying his chosen locations and painting himself, while carefully taking perspective and texture into account for spectacular results that render him almost invisible.

After about a year of looking at our old website, we decided that it was time for a bit of a website refresh!
We wanted to keep the same overall feel of the site, so rather that completely re-design it we decided to spruce it up a little bit with some subtle design changes.
I think you'll agree that the new navigation is more intuitive and the design allows us to show off our work better.

16 September 2009 by Adi GoaterSuperstar advertising
Seoul Sindorim Subway Station is one of the largest stations in Korea with a daily passing through of 500,000 people. Nikon installed motion detectors and light boxes in one of their advertising slots in the connecting passage way at the station along with a red carpet leading customers to their shop located in the mall.
This interactive advert was aimed at making their customers feel like superstars walking down a red carpet of a luxury awards event.
I think this is a fantastic idea and is a very effective way to advertise their photography products, even if it means scaring the occassional passer-by.

There are many new forms of alternative energy but maybe none as interesting as
the Cool Earth Solar “Balloon.” The concept behind this design is that they create an “inflatable plastic thin-film balloon (solar concentrator) that, upon inflation, focuses sunlight onto a photovoltaic cell held at its
focal point.
The design produces 400 times the electricity that a solar cell would create without the company’s concentrator.” Cool Earth has already began construction on a power plant in Livermore, CA that will utilize this new technology.

"In a normal camera, the light reflected from an object is projected via the lens onto the film. In the Image Fulgurator, this process is exactly the opposite: instead of an unexposed film, an exposed and developed roll of slide film is loaded into the camera and behind it, a flash. When the flash goes off, the image is projected from the film via the lens onto the object."

13 September 2007by Phil CarréSmoked out
We've had painters working on the building this week. They've been burning paint off the windows – which stinks. Two days ago there was a smoking window frame we had to put out with a washing up liquid bottle. Today it happened again and the smoke was so thick you couldn't see your hand in front of your face (or breathe) so we had to get the fire brigade in. They've demolished a sash window and damped it down. They blocked the road with two fire engines and a police car. It caused massive traffic congestion in Winchester. -

12 September 2007by Phil CarréLovely devices
I'm installing a new network for us and I've used it as an excuse to get some tools. I got these lovelies from ScrewfixThey're very nice. The big one's a hammer drill with rotation stop, which means you can put SDS chisels into it as well as normal twist drills. Marvellous. -

2 September 2007by Mark HinxmanRunning the Numbers
An American self portrait by Chris Jordan is an eye-opening look at the incredible consumption that occurs every day in America. 106,000 Aluminium cans every thirty seconds for example!
The incredibly detailed prints are made from thousands of smaller photographs and Chris Jordan himself recommends the photos be seen in person to fully appreciate them. -

17 August 2007by Philip CuffGalaxy Zoo
A new project known as Galaxy Zoo is calling on members of the public to log on to its website and help classify one million galaxies. The hope is that about 30,000 people might take part in a project that could help reveal whether our existing models of the Universe are correct.
Kevin Schawinski, an astrophysicist at Oxford University, UK, is one of the team who devised the project. "I classified about 50,000 galaxies myself in a week," he said. "It was mind-numbing."
